Taken from the History of the Wingate Family in England and America by Charles E. L. Wingate:

QUOTE

Some time in olden days a gallant English warrior was fighting with the forces of the Crown against opponents of the reign. For hours the army of which he was a member had besieged a castle, unable to force an entrance. Then suddenly the powerful and valiant solder - than whom there was no stronger in the line - rushed to the front and under a storm of showering arrows seized the castle gate with both his hands, tore it from its fastenings and bearing it away upon his shoulders, opened a way for his comrades to enter. The castle was won and England gained fresh laurels. In recognition of the event and in honor of the brave deed the hero of the day was knighted by the Crown, and to his name was added the appellation "Win-gate", symbolic of the feat.

So runs the first legend of that explains the origin of the family name of Wingate. Another story makes the name originate from "Wind-gate", so called from the stream of air sweeping through a chasm; and in substantiation of this it is said that "Windgate of that ilk" is a name found in England. But the first mentioned legend finds corroboration in the crest of the Wingate family as recorded in the General Armory of England, Scotland, Ireland and Wales (by Sir Bernard Burke, Ulster King of Arms); - A gate of gold with the motto Win above it.

I've traced my line back to Caleb Wingate (b 1744) and his wife Sarah. My main focus is on them and their descendants. However, I am convinced that all Wingets, Wingates, Wingetts, et al, are related and would love to find that connection.

Outside of computers and genealogy, I am an avid reader. I finished the first 5 Harry Potter books in the course of one summer. I love the stories by Robin Cook (mostly medical mysteries) and Terry Brooks (mostly fantasy). Former roommates gave me the nickname "the Gourmet" because I spend so much time in the kitchen. I also enjoy spending time with family.

I am looking for my great grandfather Isaac Forbes Wingate. Born to Albert Wingate and Susan True Wingate around 1869, he married Ida Mae Prescott and fathered my grandmother, Jeanette Eleanor Wingate Webster, and her brother Prescott. He disappears after 1900 and there was very little talk of him by anyone in the family. The only thing I ever heard was that he disappeared soon after my grandmother was born. Evidently, he went by "Forbes." Any information is appreciated.

Misinterpreting these terms can make the difference between linking persons to the right generation, parents, spouse or children. Understanding exactly what is stated in any record is vital before attempting to move to the next generation. Inexperienced or impatient genealogists undervalue the quality of their research by applying present-day definitions to documents created in an earlier century.

As we get more questions, I'll be adding to this list.

Question What does RTFM stand for?
</>
Answer Read the Freaking Manual. Many of your questions may already be answered in this general FAQ or the FAQ posted in each forum. If your question isn't addressed in any of the FAQ, read other posts in Tech Support (at least the first few pages). After that bit of research, feel free to start a new thread.

Question What should I do if I am offended by a post or see one that breaks the Member Guidelines?
</>
Answer There is a [tt]report[/tt] button attached to each post; clicking on it will notify the proper moderator. For problems in chat, save the transcript and PM it to any of the mods.

Question Why does it say newbie under my name and when will it change?
</>
Answer We use ranks to give incintive to participate.

Question Does this site support HTML?
</>
Answer No, HTML would introduce too many security holes. However, use use MyCode (based on the common BB Code used by other forums). I will shortly write up a help page on MyCode (including a place for you to try it out!)

Question My question isn't answered by this FAQ.
</>
Answer While not technically a question, it's still a valid concern. I've left this thread unlocked so you can submit candidate questions. Also feel free to start a new thread after you've RTFM.

Welcome to the Customer Service Center, a place where you can ask questions about the web site, message board, search engine, etc.

Please keep in mind this is not a traditional message board, but a place to ask and have your questions answered. So, after a satisfactory answer is provided, the topic may be closed. However, the topic will remain available so others can read the answer.

Make sure you read through the FAQ and the other topics before posting a new question, since odds are someone already asked it.

I would also like to point out that the questions should be related to this site (problems registering, posting, etc) or affect many of our users.

If you read a question and know how to solve it, don't hesitate to take a stab at it. We are here to grow as a community.
