Source documentation

When adding information from a family record of a genealogy, please include your own contact information along with any additional documentation.

Standardization

Names

Pages will be named according to the standard spellings of names as defined by the community. Please see Given name and Family name. This is necessary so we can define individuals uniquely, so that we can collate and co-relate contributions and build as unified a database as possible.

Models

We are in the process of creating "models" to copy for entries on people, places, and surnames.

These models are option. Any other format may be used for an individual's page. But linking of families and identification of matching individuals will be easiest with names in a single format. Plus, standardized headings for parents, siblings, and children may help someone develop software which allows semi-automatic display of family trees.

Language and text

  • Titles may be in "title case" with significant words capitalized (Wikipedia's policy is use sentence case)
  • Spellings and usage are usually as in American English. Other usages are to be accepted, especially where appropriate to the country under discussion. Please aim for consistency within a single page.

"Contradictory" content

Feel free to include documented content which disagrees with previously posted content. All we ask is that you provide your source on the page. Use the talk page to make your case.

Privacy issues

Use caution when adding information about people still living. Unless explicit permission is given, do not publicize full names and birth dates, addresses, phone numbers, or other information which can be exploited by criminals for impersonating, robbing, or harassing these persons.

Please add any articles on living people to Category:Living people. We are working on a hack to hide all articles in that catergory (or sub categories) from non-registered visitors.
