Genealogy

When I was young, my grandparents gave me a Book of Remembrance containing several generations of names, dates, and places. From that time on I was infected with the bug. As the internet became widely available I did searches on the closest related surnames.

I felt the desire to share the information I found, so I created a small script in Perl (called WinGed) to transform a GEDCOM to a set of HTML web pages. There were a few downsides: the pages were static, so I had to rerun the script whenever I made changes to my GEDCOM; static HTML pages take up a lot of space once you go beyond a few generations; and I was the only one who could add or correct information.

I found the answer to my problems in an Open Source Project called phpGedView. Now my tree is available to the public (phpGedView hides details of the living). Anyone can register, add information, or make corrections.

Since the initial launch of the Winget / Wingate Genealogy site, I added forums (powered by MyBB) to facilitate collaboration, and allow us to get better acquainted with other researchers. With some tweaks, the forums use the same usernames and passwords as phpGedView (You only need register once).
